Health Education 9
8009 Grade 9 .25 Credit 1 Semester 1 Period/Cycle
The ninth grade health education curriculum is structured so that students will meet the PA State Standards for Health Education through a variety of topics including family and social health, nutrition and fitness, drugs and medicine, consumer health, and safety and injury prevention. Through this course, students will improve their decision-making skills and create a lifestyle that is based on good choices and healthy behaviors.
Health Education 11
8010 Grade 11 .25 Credit 1 Semester 1 Period/Cycle
This course is designed to take students through a study of a variety of health topics that impact their lives on a daily basis in order to help them better comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention. Students will develop health skills that will include accessing information, self-management, analyzing influences, interpersonal communication, decision-making, goal setting and advocacy. Through this course, students will improve health literacy and create a lifestyle that is based on good choices and healthy behaviors.
Physical Education
The planned program of instruction is aligned with the Pennsylvania State Standards. The major areas of focus include Wellness, Health Related Active Lifestyles, Personal & Social Physical Education and Physical Skills & Movement Related Physical Activities. The instructional phase of the program includes Team Activities, Individual & Dual Activities and Wellness Activities.
Grade 9

The ninth grade physical education curriculum is structured so that students will meet the PA State Standards for Physical Education through a variety of aquatic, fitness, net, invasion and target games that place an emphasis on fitness development, skill acquisition, application of strategic concepts, and teamwork.
Grade 10

8004 Grade 10 .25 Credit Semester 2 1 Period/Cycle
The tenth grade physical education curriculum is structured so that students will meet the PA State standards for physical education through combination of classroom, weight training, physical fitness and cardiovascular fitness activities. Students will take part in activities that will enhance cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility and body composition. The primary objectives of this course are to improve the health-related components of fitness and to introduce the student to the concepts of fitness program design and application.
Grade 11 and 12

The eleventh and twelfth grade physical education curriculum is structured so that students will meet the PA State Standards for Physical Education through a variety of activities. Students will select activities in which to participate. Activities students select from include net/wall games, invasion games, target games, striking/fielding games, outdoor/adventure education activities and cooperative games. Emphasis is placed on advanced skill performance and application of strategic concepts and team individual.
Grades 11-12 - Personal Fitness

This course expands upon the information and techniques learned in Grade 10 – Fitness and Weight Training. Students will design and implement their own personal fitness programs targeted to meet individual needs; this format allows the student much flexibility in choosing the activities that they will participate in. Those who have an interest in improving and/or maintaining their personal fitness will have a particular interest in this course of study. The primary goal of the course is to provide the student with the skills to attain and maintain fitness throughout life.
Grades 11-12 - Lifeguarding
8050 Grades 11-12 .25 Credit Semester 1 1 Period/Cycle
This course is designed to give 11th and 12th grade students the opportunity to become certified in Lifeguarding and First Aid/CPR through the American Red Cross. Students will learn to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic and cardiac emergencies and provide basic care for other injuries/sudden illnesses. The course includes both classroom and in-water instruction, covering topics such as water rescue skills, CPR/AED, first aid, and executing emergency action plans. Students will be evaluated on practical skills, written assessments, and their ability to respond effectively in simulated emergencies.
This is an elective course that may not be used to substitute for grade 11 health.
Grades 11-12 - Sports Nutrition
8051 Grades 11-12 .25 Credit Semester 1 1 Period/Cycle
This course will introduce basic sports nutrition information to physically active students and student-athletes. It provides the tools needed to apply sports nutrition theory to sports training programs. Such benefits include improved athletic performance, enhanced body composition, healthy weight gain and maintenance, improved sleep, and overall improved health. The course will also address the dangers of the supplement industry and how to properly identify appropriate supplementation for individual use, only after taking a food-first approach to improve performance. Popular culture, as it pertains to fad diets, eating disorders, performance-enhancing drugs, and other popular nutrition topics, will also be examined.
This course may be selected in place of 1 semester of required PE.
Accelerated Physical Education
8080 Grades 11-12 .25 Credit Semester 1 1 Period/Cycle
8081 Grades 11-12 .25 Credit Semester 2 1 Period/Cycle
This course is designed to address the needs of highly competitive and motivated students with strong interests in the area of sports, athletics, recreation and physical education. The 11th and 12th grade activity-based course will also include classroom instruction. Activities selected will be the most competitive and intense activities offered by the Physical Education Department. Students interested in this course must apply through a physical education instructor and must register for both semesters.
Grade 12 - Distance Physical Education

This course is designed to address the needs of students who have a desire to participate in a non- traditional physical education setting. This hybrid curriculum is structured to meet the PA state standards for physical education. Students will have the opportunity to be physically active in their own environment and will make their activities utilizing workable technology. In addition, students will complete web-based coursework. Students interested in this course must apply through a physical education instructor and must register for both semesters.
